Its been a while

Its been quite some time since we posted last, time just flies by. We have been extremely busy with doing our best to get Brucie his therapy. Until just recently he was attending a Mothers Day out program at Community Promise here in Burleson, Texas. Accompanied by our home therapist and his Aunt Jean, Bruce was going for a 3 hour “session” of classroom and recess with neurotypical children as we prepared for next year when Brucie begins Kindergarten. Just last week, Darby was accepted into the University of North Texas and will begin working on becoming a dietitian. Given our passion for GFCF diet, our love for organic food and non genetically modified foods why not become a dietitian. The added bonus of Darby going to school is that she is eligible for Health Insurance through the University, and with this added Bonus this Insurance is a fully funded Insurance plan that is mandated to cover Autism related therapy. Its truly a blessing, for the first time since Brucie being diagnosed with Autism, he is now getting his fully prescribed therapy at Mustard Seeds Ranch in Roanoke, Texas. Mustard Seeds Ranch incorporates ABA, OT, Speech, PT, Equine Therapy, Swimming Therapy and has a special education teacher on hand. We have seen Brucie make great strides in what we have been paying out of pocket for 3 years now, We are extremely excited about the opportunity Brucie has now. It is an amazing feeling to no longer be discriminated against by Insurance due to his diagnosis. We continue to fight for awareness and hope that one day all children affected by Autism will receive their therapy. I hope everyone who is affected by Autism continues to fight for the rights of our children.

We’ve been to almost every AMC sensory friendly film since we learned about the program. If you haven’t heard about it, or if you haven’t tried it yet, we encourage you to do so. You’ll be glad you did.

Theater lights are on, the sound is turned down, and no previews or advertisements are shown before the movie starts. You can take your own gluten-free, casein-free snacks.

Doctor O. Ivar Lovaas

A respected and revered pioneer in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders has died. Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas passed away. Dr. Lovaas developed the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) which helps people with autism learn to function in day-to-day society. His work began in the 1960s and helped thousands of children with autism across the globe. ABA is evidence-based treatment that proves successful in about half of the patients treated, and can offer the chance for a more productive life. His efforts and hard work give us so much hope for our children. May God bless him and his family during this time of sorrow. Thank you Dr. Lovaas for providing us with this gift you gave to us called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

Summer Fun!

It has been quite sometime since we have posted, We have been doing some great things with Brucie this summer, he is getting OT, PT and Speech now and we have noticed vast improvements with his coloring and motor skills. We also started Homeopathy and the results are amazing, as we clear out the toxins in his body, more and more of his personality is coming back, he is more receptive and engaging. He is making huge strides and reaching so many milestones. We are extremely excited about the next few months as we are clearing out the Strep in his body, he has been very responsive to Homeopathy so far. Darby went to a conference earlier this month and was amazed by a Chinese Method of healing called Qigong. Through a 12 step process of massage it helps detoxify and desensitize children affected by Autism, this is our third day of utilizing the Qigong massage on Brucie. This massage will be a 5 month process and he is already being responsive to the massage therapy. We also recently started Music Therapy, and although Darby and I are told by Brucie to “Stop Singing”, he is intrigued by his Music therapist and enjoys playing the piano with and singing. We have made the last three sensory films at the AMC in Arlington, Toy Story 3 was alot of fun for Darby and I, I am pretty sure the kids enjoyed it, but they really enjoyed Shrek 4 and Despicable Me, Brucie has been playing with the laptop and really like the Despicable Me website as he makes the Minions float around and say funny things. Midway through Summer, we have spent alot of time swimming, a few days at the Bounce House, caught a few movies, and of course our hectic therapy schedule, but all in all our best is yet to come

I came across this video of a teenager with Autism speaking to his graduating class. With determination there is no limit to what can be achieved, effective therapy, time and love can triumph the struggles associated with Autism. Congratulations to Eric and his family for their accomplishments, truly inspirational to those who are affected by Autism.

Homeopathy Treatment

We started Brucie on a new phase of detoxification with homeopathy. A friend of ours used this method for her son, and the results are amazing. We are going into our third month and so far so good. Brucie is more engaging with us and recently has been playing very well with Samantha, his two-year-old sister. He really loves sharing with her (at times) and wants to make sure she is involved with what he is doing. It is so cute.

You Spin Me Right Round!

We have been watching a lot of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, thanks to our two-year-old Samantha. Yesterday morning Brucie and I were in the haze of waking up when he started lazily singing “you spin me right round, baby right round.” I was awakened by my four-year-old autistic son singing to me! We have come so far. What a wonderful way to start the day!!
